Summary

Brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) changes in Japanese encephalitis (JE) correlate with brainstem lesions. However, BAEP did not predict patient outcomes or coma severity in this study.

Background:

  • Japanese encephalitis (JE) frequently causes coma and brainstem involvement.
  • Brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) can evaluate and monitor brainstem function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate BAEP changes in adult JE patients.
  • To determine the role of BAEP in predicting patient outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Twelve adult JE patients underwent neurological evaluation, CT, MRI, and BAEP.
  • Coma severity was assessed using the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS).
  • Patient outcomes were defined as good or poor recovery after 3 months using the Barthel Index (BI).

  • BAEP abnormalities, specifically reduced V/I amplitude ratio, were observed in five patients.
  • These BAEP abnormalities correlated with brainstem lesions identified on CT or MRI.

    • Reduced V/I amplitude ratio in BAEP may indicate raised intracranial tension or brainstem involvement in JE.
    • BAEP changes are associated with structural brainstem lesions in JE.
    • BAEP is not a reliable predictor of clinical outcomes or coma severity in Japanese encephalitis.
