A new computer-controlled image analysis system (IAS) accurately measures antibiotic inhibition zones for most bacteria but shows significant differences in calculated minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). Clinical relevance of IAS MICs requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the accuracy and precision of a commercial IAS in measuring inhibition zone diameters.
  • To compare IAS-derived minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values with reference methods.
  • To evaluate the clinical relevance of discrepancies observed with the IAS.

Main Methods:

  • Clinical isolates of Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli, Pasteurella spp., Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, porcine streptococci, and Staphylococcus aureus were tested.
