Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Medicine
  • Gastroenterology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Cholesterol crystal embolism (CCE) is a severe complication of atherosclerosis.
  • CCE commonly manifests in the kidneys and skin, but can affect the digestive system.
  • Gallstones and abdominal aortic aneurysms are associated with CCE.

Observation:

  • Two patients with gallstones and severe atherosclerosis presented with gallbladder involvement.
  • Both patients had risk factors for cholesterol crystal migration.
  • Cholesterol crystals were identified during routine cholecystectomy.

Findings:

  • Cholesterol crystal embolism can cause ischemic cholecystitis, similar to vasculitis.
  • Gallbladder involvement in CCE suggests significant systemic disease.

Related Experiment Videos

  • CCE in the gallbladder indicates a poor prognosis.
  • Implications:

    • Recognition of CCE during cholecystectomy is crucial for identifying systemic disease.
    • This finding necessitates a thorough evaluation for widespread CCE.
    • Early diagnosis and management of CCE may improve patient outcomes.
