Summary

The pronation and flexion (PF) method for reducing radial head subluxation (RHS) showed higher success rates for left arm injuries compared to supination and flexion (SF). PF may also be less painful for initial reduction attempts.

Background:

  • Radial head subluxation (RHS) is a common pediatric elbow injury.
  • The supination and flexion (SF) method is the traditional approach for reduction.
  • Alternative techniques are being explored to improve success rates and patient comfort.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of the pronation and flexion (PF) method versus the SF method for reducing pediatric RHS.
  • To assess pain levels associated with each reduction technique.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective randomized study was conducted in a pediatric emergency department.
  • Children under 7 with upper-extremity injuries were randomized to PF or SF.
  • Success was defined by the child using the injured arm; pain was rated on a 0-3 scale by physicians and parents.
