Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Plaque psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition.
  • Treatment resistance is common in severe psoriasis cases.

Observation:

  • A patient with extensive plaque psoriasis had failed multiple treatments.
  • Failed treatments included phototherapy, retinoids, methotrexate, and cyclosporine.

Findings:

  • Successful treatment with mycophenolate mofetil was observed.
  • Sustained remission was maintained for 18 months at doses of 1-1.5 g/day.
  • No adverse effects were reported during treatment.

Implications:

  • Mycophenolate mofetil presents a potential therapeutic option for refractory psoriasis.
  • Further research into mycophenolate mofetil for severe psoriasis is warranted.
