Construction site safety inspections reveal a strong link between observed safety practices and accident rates. Sites with lower safety index scores experienced three times more accidents, highlighting the importance of safety monitoring.
Area of Science:
- Occupational Health and Safety
- Construction Management
- Risk Assessment
Background:
- Building construction sites face significant accident risks.
- Effective safety monitoring is crucial for mitigating these risks.
- Previous methods for assessing site safety have limitations.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the correlation between observed safety practices and accident rates on construction sites.
- To introduce and validate a safety inspection method for construction sites.
- To provide objective feedback for companies regarding safety performance.
Main Methods:
- Monitoring visits were conducted at 305 building construction sites.
- Safety aspects including working habits, scaffolding, equipment, and order were observed and scored.
- A safety index was calculated as the percentage of 'correct' safety items.
- Sites were grouped by safety index to analyze accident rates.
Main Results:
- A significant correlation was found between the observed safety index and site accident rates.
- Sites with the lowest safety index had, on average, three times the accident rate of sites with the highest index.
- The safety inspection method proved to be reliable and valid with minimal training.
Conclusions:
- The developed safety inspection method effectively predicts accident risk on construction sites.
- This method serves as a valuable tool for internal safety feedback and external objective assessment.
- Improving observed safety practices can lead to a substantial reduction in construction site accidents.
