Risk factors for early or delayed stroke after cardiac surgery

Most strokes after cardiac surgery occur late, with female sex increasing risk. Prior neurological events, aortic atherosclerosis, and longer bypass times are key risk factors for stroke following heart surgery.

- Atrial fibrillation increases stroke risk only when combined with low cardiac output syndrome.
