This study details a rare case of osteoid osteoma in a rib bone. This bone tumor should be considered in patients with unexplained rib pain, even without a history of trauma.

Background:

  • Osteoid osteoma is a benign bone tumor typically affecting long bones.
  • Costal (rib) osteoid osteomas are exceptionally rare, with limited documented cases in medical literature.

Observation:

  • A 32-year-old female presented with symptoms suggestive of a rib lesion.
  • Diagnostic imaging revealed findings consistent with osteoid osteoma localized to the 9th rib.

Findings:

  • A comprehensive literature review identified only 16 previously reported cases of costal osteoid osteoma.
  • This case adds to the scarce body of knowledge regarding osteoid osteoma in the rib cage.

Implications:

  • Clinicians should consider osteoid osteoma in the differential diagnosis for painful rib conditions, particularly when trauma is not evident.
  • Increased awareness may lead to earlier diagnosis and appropriate management of this rare entity.
