Summary

Type-2 diabetes (non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus) in the elderly is not linked to significant memory loss or cognitive dysfunction. Minor effects on executive functions were observed but unlikely to impact daily life.

Background:

  • Type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), also known as non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), is a prevalent condition in elderly populations.
  • The relationship between T2DM and cognitive decline, independent of dementia, requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if T2DM is associated with cognitive dysfunction in non-demented elderly individuals.
  • To assess the impact of T2DM on memory and executive functions in this demographic.

Main Methods:

  • A neuropsychological test battery was administered to 183 elderly patients with T2DM and 732 non-diabetic controls.
  • Cognitive function was evaluated using tests such as the Trail-Making Test and the Mini-Mental State Examination.

  • Elderly individuals with T2DM showed impairments in the Trail-Making Test (parts A and C), suggesting mild frontal lobe/executive function deficits.
