Primary Swenson pull-through surgery for Hirschsprung

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Gastroenterology
  • Congenital Disorders

Background:

  • Hirschsprung's disease treatment trends towards earlier definitive surgery.
  • Primary Swenson pull-through is the preferred procedure at our institution.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes of primary Swenson pull-through for Hirschsprung's disease.
  • To compare primary pull-through with multi-stage surgical approaches.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 65 patients treated for Hirschsprung's disease (1988-1998).
  • Comparison between multi-stage (M, n=47) and primary (P, n=18) groups.
  • Statistical analysis using median values, ANOVA, and chi-squared tests.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Primary group had significantly lower age and weight at pull-through.
  • Shorter length of stay (LOS) and decreased operating time in the primary group.
  • Primary pull-through showed fewer total complications without increased mortality or enterocolitis.

Conclusions:

  • Primary Swenson pull-through is a safe and effective option for Hirschsprung's disease.
  • No increase in complications or enterocolitis observed with the primary approach.
