Leukoderma following occupational allergic contact dermatitis.

Summary

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis can lead to leukoderma (depigmentation). Patch testing identified colophony, pine sawdust, and epoxy resin as allergens in two cases, suggesting potential for better repigmentation than vitiligo.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Occupational Medicine

Background:

  • Occupational allergic contact dermatitis is a common condition.
  • Leukoderma, or depigmentation, can sometimes follow inflammatory skin conditions.

Observation:

  • Two cases of occupational allergic contact dermatitis followed by leukoderma are presented.
  • Case 1: A wood machinist developed leukoderma on contact areas after allergic reactions to colophony and pine sawdust.
  • Case 2: An epoxy applicator developed depigmentation on contact areas after an allergic reaction to epoxy resin.

Findings:

  • Patch testing confirmed allergies to specific occupational agents (colophony, pine sawdust, epoxy resin).
  • The depigmentation (leukoderma) occurred in areas affected by contact dermatitis.
  • Contact leukoderma can mimic idiopathic vitiligo clinically.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Identifying occupational allergens is crucial for managing contact leukoderma.
  • Contact leukoderma may have a better prognosis for repigmentation compared to idiopathic vitiligo.
  • Awareness of this association can aid in diagnosis and patient counseling.
