Summary

This study found that while multiple brain regions with hypoperfusion are common in Alzheimer's disease (DAT), specific patterns like bilateral temporoparietal hypoperfusion are not unique to DAT patients. More widespread hypoperfusion correlated with cognitive decline.

Background:

  • Alzheimer's disease (DAT) diagnosis relies on clinical criteria and neuroimaging.
  • HMPAO-SPECT (hexamethylpropylene amine oxime-single photon emission computed tomography) is used to assess cerebral blood flow.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between HMPAO-SPECT findings and probable DAT.
  • To evaluate the diagnostic utility of specific SPECT patterns in differentiating DAT patients from controls.

Main Methods:

  • Compared HMPAO-SPECT patterns in 116 DAT patients and 20 controls.
  • Assessed hypoperfusion in frontal, temporal, parietal, and occipital brain regions.
  • Correlated SPECT findings with Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores.

  • SPECT findings alone did not significantly differentiate DAT patients from controls in this study.
  • Further research is needed to clarify the clinical and theoretical implications of SPECT findings in DAT.
