Background:

  • Hypoglycaemia, or low blood sugar, is a common metabolic disturbance.
  • Neurological deficits can arise from various causes, including cerebrovascular accidents (stroke).

Observation:

  • An 83-year-old male presented with symptoms strongly resembling a stroke, including hemiparesis (weakness on one side of the body).
  • Initial assessment revealed severe hypoglycaemia as the underlying cause of the neurological presentation.

Findings:

  • Hypoglycaemic hemiparesis is an under-recognized clinical manifestation of low blood sugar.
  • Failure to promptly diagnose and manage hypoglycaemia can lead to irreversible central nervous system injury.

Implications:
