Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Amelanotic melanomas represent a small fraction (2%) of all melanomas.
  • These tumors lack the typical melanin pigment, complicating clinical diagnosis.

Observation:

  • Amelanotic lentigo maligna is exceptionally rare.
  • Clinical presentations can be atypical, including erythema, pruritus, or edema.

Findings:

  • Biopsy is essential for accurate diagnosis of amelanotic melanoma.
  • Surgical excision with margin control, such as Mohs micrographic surgery, is the preferred treatment.

Implications:

  • Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective management.
  • Mohs surgery offers the best outcome for amelanotic lentigo maligna.
