Background:

  • Multidirectional instability of the shoulder is a condition often treated with surgical inferior capsular shift.
  • Previous reports suggest good to excellent outcomes (75%-100%) for mid-term follow-up of open procedures.
  • Arthroscopic approaches for shoulder instability have been previously described.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the outcomes of arthroscopic capsular shift for multidirectional shoulder instability.
  • To evaluate results with a minimum follow-up of 2 years.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 25 patients undergoing arthroscopic capsular shift with transglenoid technique (1990-1993).
  • Patients had failed conservative physical therapy and had no prior shoulder surgery.
