Area of Science:

  • Socioeconomic studies
  • Economics
  • Sociology

Background:

  • Income inequality and economic mobility are key indicators of socioeconomic health.
  • Understanding factors influencing income quintile changes is crucial for policy development.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze intergenerational income mobility in the United States.
  • To determine changes in mobility patterns between the 1970s and 1980s.
  • To investigate the impact of family composition and labor market events on mobility.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of individual mobility across equivalent family income quintiles.
  • Tracking income movements over time.
  • Comparing mobility determinants across decades.

Main Results:

  • Overall income mobility rates showed little change between the 1970s and 1980s.
  • Upward mobility declined for individuals in families headed by young adults in the 1980s compared to the 1970s.
  • Individuals in families without a college-educated head experienced reduced upward mobility in the 1980s.

Conclusions:

  • While overall mobility was stable, specific demographic groups faced diminished opportunities for upward economic mobility in the 1980s.
  • Socioeconomic changes may have altered the determinants of mobility, impacting vulnerable populations disproportionately.
