Abstract:
Care of patients with dysphagia includes screening, diagnosis, treatment and management. This article examines the increasing evidence that to be most effective each of these aspects of patient care must be tailored to the patient's medical diagnosis, specific swallowing disorders and stage of recovery or degeneration. The need to define the optimal window of intervention for each patient type is also discussed. Future research needs are emphasized.
