Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Hematology
  • Neonatal Oncology
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Congenital and neonatal leukemia, though rare, present significant mortality challenges.
  • Unknown etiology suggests potential roles for genetic abnormalities and intrauterine exposures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To summarize the current understanding of congenital and neonatal leukemia.
  • To highlight diagnostic challenges and management strategies.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature on congenital and neonatal leukemia.
  • Analysis of recent findings in genetic abnormalities associated with these conditions.

Main Results:

  • Identification of specific chromosomal rearrangements common in congenital leukemia.
  • Recognition of a broad differential diagnosis in neonates.

Conclusions:

  • Congenital leukemia requires thorough investigation and supportive care.
  • High-intensity chemotherapy regimens show promising results despite a poor initial prognosis.
