Area of Science:

  • Infectious disease epidemiology
  • Public health program evaluation
  • Disability studies

Context:

  • The Leprosy Elimination Programme, initiated in 1991, achieved substantial reductions in global leprosy cases within a decade.
  • A rapid decline in case detection and incidence rates was observed following the program's implementation.

Purpose:

  • To assess the long-term impact of the Leprosy Elimination Programme.
  • To highlight the evolving challenges in leprosy control beyond mere case reduction.
  • To advocate for a dual approach addressing both infectious and disabling aspects of leprosy.

Summary:

  • Global leprosy case load reduced tenfold in 10 years post-1991 program initiation.
  • Sustained control of leprosy as an infectious disease remains crucial.
  • Increased attention is required for managing leprosy-induced deformity and disability.

Impact:

  • Demonstrates the success of targeted public health interventions in infectious disease control.
  • Underscores the need for comprehensive strategies that address chronic conditions and their long-term consequences.
  • Informs future public health policies for neglected tropical diseases, emphasizing holistic patient care.
