Area of Science:

  • Forensic Pathology
  • Public Health
  • Suicidology

Background:

  • Suicidal drowning is an understudied method of suicide.
  • Understanding the demographics and circumstances of suicidal drowning is crucial for prevention efforts.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review autopsy protocols to identify cases of suicidal drowning.
  • To establish a profile of individuals who die by suicidal drowning.
  • To analyze the prevalence and characteristics of suicidal drowning in Broward County, Florida.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of autopsy protocols from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
  • Analysis of suicide and drowning data between July 1, 1994, and June 30, 1998.
  • Evaluation of demographic, situational, and method-specific factors in drowning suicides.

Main Results:

  • Suicidal drowning accounted for 2.86% of all suicides (25 cases) and was the 8th leading cause of suicidal death.
  • In individuals aged 65 and older, suicidal drowning represented 6.7% of all suicides in this age group.
  • Swimming pools, canals, and lakes were preferred locations for suicidal drowning.
  • Alcohol or drug use was less common in elderly suicide victims compared to younger individuals.

Conclusions:

  • Suicidal drowning is a notable, though not predominant, method of suicide, particularly among the elderly.
  • Specific locations like pools and canals are frequently associated with suicidal drownings.
  • Further research is needed to understand the lower-than-anticipated rate of suicidal drowning given water availability.
