Summary

Verbal feedback during public speaking stress significantly altered psychobiological responses. Arousing comments increased emotional stress, while reassuring comments amplified physiological stress, revealing distinct coping styles.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Psychophysiology
  • Stress Research

Background:

  • Public speaking is a common stressor.
  • Psychobiological reactions to stress can be modulated.
  • Anticipation period is critical for stress response.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of verbal comments during stress anticipation on psychobiological reactions.
  • To determine if different types of feedback influence emotional and physiological stress responses.
  • To explore the resulting coping styles.

Main Methods:

  • Sixty male students were subjected to public speaking stress.
  • Three conditions: silent control, arousing feedback, reassuring feedback during anticipation.
  • Measured heart rate, blood pressure, cortisol, and electrodermal responses.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Reassuring feedback led to highest physiological stress (heart rate, blood pressure, cortisol, electrodermal responses).
  • Arousing feedback led to highest emotional stress.
  • Discrepancies between emotional and physiological responses varied by condition, indicating different coping styles.

Conclusions:

  • Verbal comments during anticipation significantly influence stress responses.
  • Arousing feedback induced a sensitive coping style (emotional > physiological).
  • Reassuring feedback induced a defensive coping style (emotional < physiological).
