Summary

Pediatric pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB) has a poor prognosis, but this case shows long-term survival. Complete surgical excision and favorable tumor characteristics may improve outcomes for this rare pediatric lung cancer.

Background:

Pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB) is a rare pediatric lung tumor with a historically poor prognosis.
Long-term survival data for PPB is limited, making individual case studies valuable.

Observation:

A 2-year-old girl presented with respiratory distress due to a pleuropulmonary blastoma.
The patient underwent surgical resection followed by a 6-month course of dactinomycin and vincristine chemotherapy.

Findings:

The patient achieved a 12-year disease-free survival following treatment.
Favorable prognostic factors identified include a small tumor size (<5 cm), complete surgical excision, and specific histologic features.

Implications:

This case highlights the potential for long-term survival in pediatric pleuropulmonary blastoma.
Identifying prognostic factors is crucial for tailoring treatment and improving outcomes in rare pediatric lung cancers.
