Summary

This study examined vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels in pleural fluid from 70 patients with various thoracic conditions. Researchers found that VEGF levels varied significantly depending on the diagnosis, with the highest levels in patients with malignancy. VEGF levels were also closely linked to lactate dehydrogenase and total protein levels in the fluid. However, the overlap between groups suggests that VEGF alone may not be a reliable diagnostic marker. The study does not claim that VEGF is essential for diagnosing pleural effusions, but it may provide insights into fluid regulation in some cases.
