Summary

Cerebral sparganosis, a rare parasitic infection, can cause seizures and brain lesions. Surgical removal of the parasite is the most effective treatment, as antiparasitic drugs are often ineffective.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Parasitology

Background:

  • Cerebral sparganosis is a rare parasitic infection of the brain.
  • Diagnosis can be challenging due to nonspecific imaging findings.

Observation:

  • A 19-year-old male presented with generalized tonic-clonic convulsions.
  • Brain imaging revealed multiple bilateral frontal lesions, including calcifications and ventricular compression.
  • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) confirmed sparganum infection.

Findings:

  • The patient initially received praziquantel, which proved ineffective.
  • Surgical removal of the sparganum lesion resulted in complete recovery.
  • The case presented unique imaging features, including bilateral involvement and ventricular compression, suggesting an active disease stage.

Implications:

  • Surgical intervention is the treatment of choice for cerebral sparganosis.
  • Imaging findings can suggest sparganosis but are not definitive.
  • Pathologic or immunologic confirmation is crucial for diagnosis.
