Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Public Health
  • Healthcare Services Research

Background:

  • A reasonable colonoscopy service requires approximately 160 procedures per 100,000 population annually.
  • The United Kingdom's endoscopy units face challenges in meeting service demands and expanding capacity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To document current colonoscopy service levels in the UK.
  • To assess the utilization of surveillance guidelines in colonoscopy practice.
  • To evaluate the potential for expanding endoscopy unit capacity.

Main Methods:

  • A postal questionnaire was distributed to 294 endoscopy units across the United Kingdom.
  • Data were collected on service provision, staffing, capacity, and adherence to surveillance guidelines.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • 49% of units met the target colonoscopy procedures per capita; 50% operated at full capacity.
  • Key barriers to expansion included lack of nursing support (81%), endoscopists (72%), and physical space (51%).
  • Adherence to surveillance guidelines varied significantly, with over 70% of units lacking formal protocols for surveillance practices.

Conclusions:

  • While colonoscopy services have grown, significant constraints impede further expansion.
  • There is a critical need for standardized national guidelines for surveillance colonoscopy to improve practice consistency and service delivery.
