Summary

Environmental worry does not directly increase environmentally conscious behavior. Changing social norms, rather than individual attitudes, is more effective for promoting eco-friendly actions.

Area of Science:

  • Environmental Psychology
  • Behavioral Science
  • Sociology

Background:

  • Environmental problems can cause psychological distress, termed environmental worry.
  • Understanding the link between environmental worry and actual behavior is crucial for effective environmental policy.
  • Previous research suggests a potential connection between concern and action, but empirical evidence is mixed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To validate a scale for measuring environmental worry.
  • To investigate the relationship between environmental worry and environmentally conscious behavior.
  • To identify predictors of environmentally conscious behavior, including attitudes, social norms, and social identity.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was conducted with 74 employees in East Germany experiencing environmental issues.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The study utilized an environmental worry scale and questionnaires assessing attitudes, social norms, and behavior.
  • Environmentally conscious behavior was measured across dimensions like waste management, resource conservation, and avoidance of toxic substances.
  • Main Results:

    • The factor structure of the environmental worry scale was confirmed.
    • Higher education levels correlated with lower environmental worry.
    • No direct correlation was found between environmental worry and environmentally conscious behavior.
    • Significant relationships were observed between environmental worry, environmental attitudes, and social norms.

    Conclusions:

    • Environmental worry alone does not appear to drive environmentally conscious behavior.
    • Interventions targeting social norms are more effective in modifying environmentally conscious behavior than those focusing on individual attitudes.
    • Future strategies should consider the social context when aiming to promote sustainable practices.
