Multiple sclerosis patients with prior optic neuritis show reduced optic nerve fiber layer thickness. This thinning correlates with pattern electroretinogram (PERG) changes, but not visual evoked potential (VEP) alterations.

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease affecting the central nervous system.
  • Optic neuritis, a common MS manifestation, can lead to long-term visual pathway damage.
  • Assessing retinal and visual pathway function is crucial for understanding MS progression.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between optic nerve fiber layer (NFL) thickness and retinal/visual pathway function in MS patients post-optic neuritis.
  • To determine if NFL thinning correlates with functional deficits in the visual system.

Main Methods:

  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT) measured NFL thickness (Overall and Temporal) in 14 MS patients with prior optic neuritis and 14 controls.
  • Pattern electroretinograms (PERGs) and visual evoked potentials (VEPs) assessed retinal and visual pathway function using checkerboard stimuli.

    • No significant correlation was found between NFL thickness and VEP changes in this patient cohort.
