Summary

Pupil and visual function are impaired in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON). However, pupil afferent fibers show relative sparing compared to visual function deficits in LHON patients.

Area of Science:

  • Neuro-ophthalmology
  • Optic Neuropathies

Background:

  • Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a maternally inherited mitochondrial disease.
  • LHON primarily affects the optic nerve, leading to vision loss.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare pupil function with visual function in LHON patients.
  • To assess the relative impact of LHON on visual versus pupil pathways.

Main Methods:

  • Visual function assessed via automated static perimetry.
  • Pupil function measured by light stimulus response in the visual field.
  • Pupil afferent defect quantified by comparing stimulus intensity and pupil response size.

Main Results:

  • LHON patients showed significantly reduced pupil responses and raised perceptual thresholds.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Unperceived stimuli were more likely to elicit pupil responses in LHON patients.
  • Visual deficits were quantitatively larger than pupil deficits in LHON patients.
  • Conclusions:

    • Both visual and pupil functions are demonstrably abnormal in LHON.
    • Pupil afferent fibers appear relatively spared compared to visual pathways in LHON.
