Summary

Hemodialysis can cause neutropenia and hypoxemia, but complement activation may not be the sole cause. Other factors likely contribute to these adverse effects during dialysis.

Background:

  • Hemodialysis with cellulosic membranes triggers complement activation, neutrophil stimulation, and leukostasis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between complement activation, neutrophil/platelet integrin expression (CD11b, CD61), neutrophil counts, and blood gas changes during hemodialysis.
  • To determine if complement activation is the primary driver of dialysis-related neutropenia and hypoxemia.

  • A prospective cross-over trial involving six patients dialyzed with polysulfone, cellulose acetate, and cuprophane membranes.
