Background:

  • Understanding the maturation of frequency discrimination is key to identifying developmental milestones.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate maturational changes in children's frequency discrimination abilities.
  • To determine the age at which frequency discrimination skills mature.

Main Methods:

  • Frequency difference limens (DLs) were measured in children aged 5 to 11 years and young adults.
  • A two-alternative, two-interval, forced-choice procedure was used with tones of varying durations (200, 50, 20 ms).

Main Results:

  • Younger children (5- and 7-year-olds) had significantly larger DLs than older children and adults.
  • No significant differences in DLs were found between 9-year-olds, 11-year-olds, and adults.
  • Performance improved with longer tone durations across all age groups.

Conclusions:

  • Frequency discrimination skills for brief tones mature after age 7.
  • Sensory and/or cognitive skills for auditory frequency discrimination continue developing into later childhood.
