The 8 mg. dose of doxazosin showed greater efficacy than the 4 mg. dose for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Increasing the doxazosin dosage to 8 mg. is recommended for patients not adequately responding to 4 mg.

Background:

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition in aging men.
  • Doxazosin is an alpha-1 blocker used to treat BPH symptoms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of 4 mg versus 8 mg of doxazosin in patients with BPH.
  • To evaluate the impact of different doxazosin dosages on symptom scores and urinary flow rates.

Main Methods:

  • A double-blind study randomized 82 BPH patients already on 4 mg doxazosin to either 4 mg or 8 mg.
  • Patients were assessed using the American Urological Association (AUA) symptom score, Boyarsky score, uroflowmetry, and side effect profiles at baseline, 1 month, and 3 months.

Main Results:

  • The 8 mg group showed statistically significant improvements in Boyarsky scores (p <0.05) and AUA symptom scores (p <0.05) compared to the 4 mg group at 3 months.

  • No significant differences were observed in maximum urinary flow rate changes between the two groups (p >0.05).
  • Dropout rates and reported side effects were similar between the 4 mg and 8 mg doxazosin groups.
