Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Desmoid tumors (DT) are rare, locally invasive neoplasms with unknown etiology and debated treatment strategies.
  • This study reviews 12 desmoid tumor cases and relevant literature.

Observation:

  • Twelve desmoid tumors were treated over 3.5 years, with 10 primary, 1 recurrent, and 1 secondary primary tumor.
  • Tumor locations varied, including abdominal wall, extremities, back, pelvis, retroperitoneum, and mesentery (one with familial adenomatous polyposis coli).

Findings:

  • Complete surgical excision was achieved in 11 of 12 cases, with microscopically clear margins in nine.
  • At a mean follow-up of 22 months, 92% of patients were free of recurrence, with one case of local recurrence successfully re-excised.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Complete excision is the main treatment modality for desmoid tumors, proving feasible in most locations.
  • Surgical resection alone demonstrates high efficacy in achieving local tumor control for desmoid tumors.
