Background:

  • Eosinophilic airway inflammation is a key feature of asthma.
  • It is associated with airflow limitation and airway hyperresponsiveness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between sputum eosinophils, respiratory function, and airway responsiveness in asthma patients.
  • To determine if sputum eosinophil counts correlate with objective measures of asthma control.

Main Methods:

  • Seventy asymptomatic asthma patients underwent spirometry, peak expiratory flow (PEF) measurement, histamine challenge tests, and sputum induction.
  • Patients were on bronchodilators, inhaled corticosteroids, or both for over two months.

Conclusions:

  • Single-point measurements of FEV1% and V25/Ht indirectly reflect airway inflammation.
  • Peak expiratory flow and histamine responsiveness do not correlate with the degree of airway inflammation in this cohort.
