Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Neurology
  • Pain Management

Background:

  • Meniere's disease (MD) and Meniere's syndrome (MS) are inner ear disorders.
  • Headache is a common but often unexamined symptom in MD/MS patients.
  • Vestibular neuronitis (VN) serves as a control for comparison.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of headache in patients with MD/MS.
  • To compare headache in MD/MS patients with those suffering from VN.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of various headache treatments in MD/MS patients.

Main Methods:

  • 86 patients with MD/MS and 45 patients with VN were included.
  • A clinical examination and a headache-specific questionnaire were administered.
  • Statistical analysis was performed to compare groups and assess treatment outcomes.

Main Results:

  • 70% of MD/MS patients reported headache, compared to 58% of VN patients.
  • Headache in MD/MS patients was generally more severe, with a higher incidence of occipital and neck pain.
  • Tricyclic antidepressants and other pain-relieving medications were frequently used by MD/MS patients for headache relief.

Conclusions:

  • Headache is a significant and potentially disabling symptom associated with Meniere's disease/syndrome.
  • Tricyclic antidepressants appear effective for managing headache in MD/MS patients.
  • Sumatriptan was not found to be effective for non-migraine headache in this patient cohort.
