Area of Science:

  • Microbiology
  • Infectious Disease Control
  • Biotechnology

Background:

  • Endoscope reprocessing is critical for preventing healthcare-associated infections.
  • Conventional disinfection methods can be time-consuming and utilize harsh chemicals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a novel endoscope disinfector (WM-1) utilizing acidic electrolytic water (AEW).

Main Methods:

  • AEW was generated via electrolysis of NaCl solution (pH < 2.7, redox potential > 1000 mV).
  • Disinfection efficacy was tested against artificial and clinical contamination (bacteria, viruses, H. pylori, HCV).
  • In vivo and in vitro studies assessed AEW safety (irritancy, toxicity, mutagenicity).

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • AEW completely inactivated all tested bacteria and viruses.
  • Five minutes of AEW exposure eliminated clinical contamination from endoscopes.
  • AEW demonstrated non-irritant, non-toxic, and non-mutagenic properties.

Conclusions:

  • The WM-1 disinfector provides successful and safe endoscope disinfection.
  • AEW disinfection is a cost-effective (¥24/day) alternative to traditional methods.
