    Summary

Ligation is effective for isolated peripheral arterial injuries in children with good collateral supply. However, injuries near the elbow or knee, especially with fractures, lead to higher complications.

    Area of Science:

    • Pediatric Surgery
    • Vascular Surgery
    • Trauma Management

    Background:

    • Peripheral arterial injuries in children are uncommon but can lead to significant morbidity.
    • Management strategies require careful consideration of injury patterns and anatomical location.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate treatment outcomes for peripheral arterial injuries in pediatric patients.
    • To identify factors influencing morbidity and guide optimal management strategies.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of 43 children treated for peripheral arterial injuries.
    • Analysis of injury types, locations, associated factors, and treatment modalities.

    Main Results:

    • Ligation proved effective for single arterial injuries with adequate collateral circulation.
    • Injuries around the elbow or knee, particularly those associated with fractures, demonstrated the highest rates of morbidity.

    Conclusions:

    • Early arteriography and prompt surgical exploration are crucial for managing suspected arterial injuries.
    • A high level of surgical expertise is essential for optimizing outcomes in pediatric peripheral arterial injuries, especially in complex cases involving joints.
