Background:

Work-related violence poses a significant threat to healthcare professionals.
There is a critical gap in understanding the specific risk factors contributing to workplace assaults on nurses.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify and analyze the risk factors associated with work-related assault injuries experienced by nurses.

Main Methods:

A case-control study design was employed.
Unconditional logistic regression was utilized to model the relationship between assault injuries and various exposures, controlling for confounders.

Main Results:

Reduced assault rates were observed with the presence of security personnel (RR = 0.40).

Increased assault rates were linked to administrative perceptions of assault as "part of the job" (RR = 8.14), lack of assault prevention training (RR = 4.64), high patient/personnel ratios (RR = 2.54), working with mentally ill patients (RR = 3.5), and longer patient lengths of stay (RR = 8.85 and 4.25).

Conclusions:

Several modifiable and environmental factors significantly increase the risk of assault injuries among nurses.
Targeted interventions, including security presence and comprehensive training, are crucial for mitigating workplace violence in nursing.
