Background:

  • Stroke occurring during sleep is an understudied area in vascular neurology.
  • The pathogenesis, clinical significance, and prevention of sleep-onset strokes remain uncertain.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of ischemic stroke that occurs during sleep.
  • To compare strokes occurring during sleep versus while awake.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 1,822 consecutive acute ischemic stroke patients from the Tel Aviv Stroke Register.
  • Comparison of demographic data, vascular risk factors, vascular distribution, and stroke severity between sleep-onset and wake-onset strokes using statistical tests (t test with Bonferroni correction, chi(2) test).

  • Strokes during sleep were found to be significantly severer than those occurring while awake.
