Summary

Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and ulcerative colitis (UC) share autoimmune features. This study found PBC prevalence in UC patients is 30 times higher than in the general population, suggesting an immunological link.

Background:

  • Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are autoimmune disorders.
  • Thirteen cases of coexisting PBC and UC have been documented.
  • Patients with coexisting diseases are typically younger males, with milder UC.

Observation:

  • A study in Crete identified 412 UC and 82 PBC cases in 550,000 people.
  • Two cases of coexisting UC and PBC were found.
  • No additional cases were identified through immunological screening (AMA positivity) of 150 UC sera.

Findings:

  • The prevalence of PBC among UC patients in this region is at least 30 times higher than in the general population.
  • This increased prevalence suggests a potential shared immunological basis or risk factor.
