Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a rare skin cancer. Wide local excision up to 3 cm significantly reduced local recurrence in three DFSP cases, suggesting an effective surgical approach.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is an uncommon, slow-growing malignant neoplasm of the skin.
  • While surgical excision is a primary treatment, local recurrence rates remain a concern in the literature.

Observation:

  • This paper presents three cases of DFSP treated surgically.
  • A wide local excision, extending up to 3 cm from the tumor borders, was performed in all cases.

Findings:

  • No local recurrences were observed in the treated DFSP cases.
  • The employed surgical technique demonstrated promising results in preventing DFSP recurrence.

Implications:

  • Wide local excision with a 3 cm margin may be an effective strategy to minimize local recurrence of DFSP.

  • Further studies are warranted to validate this surgical approach in a larger cohort.
