    Summary

This study shows a new DMSO spray effectively treats acute respiratory obstruction in infants. The spray, combined with ampicillin, led to rapid symptom improvement and reduced the need for intensive respiratory support.

    Area of Science:

    • Pediatric Pulmonology
    • Pharmacology
    • Clinical Medicine

    Background:

    • Acute respiratory obstruction in infants presents significant clinical challenges.
    • Existing treatments for pediatric respiratory distress have limitations.
    • Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a penetrating agent offers potential therapeutic benefits.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the clinical efficacy of a novel medicinal spray containing anti-inflammatory and bacteriostatic drugs with DMSO.
    • To assess the therapeutic impact of DMSO spray on infants diagnosed with acute respiratory obstruction.
    • To compare the outcomes of DMSO spray treatment against a control group receiving standard care.

    Main Methods:

    • A randomized, controlled clinical trial involving 60 infants with acute respiratory obstruction.
    • Treatment group received a 2 ml DMSO spray (anti-inflammatory, bacteriostatic drugs) plus ampicillin.
    • Control group received ampicillin and standard care without DMSO spray nebulization; sequential design used for evaluation.

    Main Results:

    • Significant and rapid improvement observed within 30 minutes in the DMSO spray group.
    • High percentages of improvement in sensorium (80%), intercostal retraction (75%), and polypnea (76%).
    • DMSO spray group showed transformation to a catarrhal syndrome (80%), easier secretion expulsion, and no need for croupette use.

    Conclusions:

    • The DMSO-integrated medicinal spray demonstrates significant therapeutic benefits in treating acute respiratory obstruction in infants.
    • The spray facilitates easier secretion expulsion and reduces the severity of obstructive symptoms.
    • Easy application, absence of toxic side effects, and favorable clinical outcomes support the use of this spray in bronchiolitis.
