Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively assess bowel function and symptom changes after laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
  • To differentiate surgical effects from non-specific laparoscopic procedure impacts.

Main Methods:

  • 106 adult patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy and 37 women undergoing laparoscopic sterilization were studied.
  • Pre- and post-surgery questionnaires and defecation records (stool form, frequency) were collected over 2-6 months.

Main Results:

  • Cholecystectomy patients perceived less constipation and slightly more frequent stools, but objective records showed no consistent changes in bowel function or stool form.
  • Diarrhea was reported rarely post-surgery, and when present, it was mild and not clearly new.
  • Dietary fiber intake changes did not correlate with bowel function, but discontinuing constipating medications did in some patients.

Conclusions:

  • Cholecystectomy may lead to a subjective perception of improved bowel regularity in women, but objective data indicates minimal impact on bowel function.
  • Clinically significant diarrhea is an uncommon outcome following cholecystectomy and is typically mild.
