Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Parkinson's disease (PD) management often involves long-term medication.
  • Amantadine is a commonly used drug for PD symptoms.

Observation:

  • A 48-year-old woman with a 17-year history of PD developed peripheral neuropathy.
  • This neuropathy emerged after 8 years of continuous amantadine treatment.

Findings:

  • Discontinuation of amantadine led to the resolution of trophic skin ulcers, paresthesias, and distal weakness.
  • The patient's neuropathy was directly linked to amantadine administration.

Implications:

  • Amantadine may pose risks for patients with severe, chronic livedo reticularis.
  • Clinicians should monitor for peripheral neuropathy in PD patients on long-term amantadine.
  • Consider alternative treatments or dose adjustments for patients with risk factors.
