    Summary

Skeletal muscle wasting, a common issue in disease, involves suppressed protein synthesis and increased breakdown. Identifying specific catabolic factors is key for developing effective anabolic and anti-catabolic therapies to improve patient survival and recovery.

    • Biochemistry
    • Physiology
    • Medicine

    Background:

    • Negative nitrogen balance and skeletal muscle wasting are linked to numerous disease states.
    • Muscle mass depletion critically impacts patient survival and prolongs rehabilitation.
    • Biochemical mechanisms of muscle wasting are primarily studied in animal models.
