We present two methods to simplify and optimize semantic interpretation of medical narratives using generalized triggering conditions and inheritance-based rules. This approach creates a flexible set of domain-independent interpretation schemata, proven effective on medical texts.

Area of Science:

  • Natural Language Processing
  • Medical Informatics
  • Computational Linguistics

Background:

  • Semantic interpretation of medical narratives is complex.
  • Current methods may lack efficiency and flexibility.
  • Optimizing this process is crucial for medical data analysis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce novel abstraction mechanisms for simplifying semantic interpretation of medical narratives.
  • To develop a parsimonious, domain-independent set of semantic interpretation schemata.
  • To enhance the optimization of medical narrative analysis.

Main Methods:

  • Developed two abstraction mechanisms: generalized triggering conditions and inheritance-based semantic rule specifications.
  • Created abstract, simple, and domain-independent semantic interpretation schemata.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Evaluated the methodology on a medical text corpus.
  • Main Results:

    • The proposed abstraction mechanisms simplify and optimize semantic interpretation.
    • A parsimonious inventory of domain-independent schemata was achieved.
    • Effectiveness was demonstrated through evaluation on a medical text corpus.

    Conclusions:

    • The introduced abstraction mechanisms offer an effective approach to semantic interpretation of medical narratives.
    • The methodology promotes efficiency and reusability of semantic interpretation rules.
    • This work contributes to advancing automated analysis of clinical text data.
