Summary

Rheumatoid arthritis significantly reduces lifespan, shortening life expectancy by 5-10 years in most patients. This excess mortality is linked to disease complications and increased non-specific causes of death.

Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease impacting joint health.
  • RA is known to affect patient quality of life.
  • Limited data exists on the long-term survival impact of RA.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To synthesize findings from major studies on rheumatoid arthritis mortality.
  • To quantify the impact of RA on life expectancy.
  • To identify factors contributing to excess mortality in RA patients.

Main Methods:

  • Meta-analysis of 14 key studies conducted since 1980.
  • Inclusion of data from 13,424 rheumatoid arthritis patients.
  • Comparison of mortality ratios against the general population.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • A mean standardized mortality ratio of 1.82 was observed in RA patients.
  • Life expectancy for RA patients was reduced by an average of 5 to 10 years.
  • Excess mortality is attributed to RA-specific complications and increased non-specific causes like infections.

Conclusions:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis significantly shortens life expectancy.
  • Mortality risk factors in RA overlap with those for functional impairment.
  • Further research is needed to understand end-of-life issues for RA patients.
