Summary

Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) maintenance therapy significantly reduces tumor recurrence and disease progression in bladder cancer patients. Optimal BCG schedules improve long-term survival and are superior to induction therapy alone.

Background:

  • Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) immunotherapy is a standard treatment for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer.

  • To evaluate the efficacy of optimal maintenance Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) therapy in preventing tumor recurrence and disease progression.
  • To assess the impact of maintenance BCG on long-term survival in high-risk bladder cancer patients.

  • A Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) study compared different BCG maintenance schedules.
