Summary

Induced abortions are linked to longer subsequent pregnancies, increasing risks for both preterm and post-term births. This risk is higher with multiple abortions and longer intervals between pregnancies.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Health
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Previous induced abortions may affect subsequent pregnancy outcomes.
  • Understanding the impact of abortion history on gestation length is crucial for reproductive health counseling.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between induced abortion and the duration of subsequent pregnancies.
  • To determine if prior induced abortions influence the risk of preterm or post-term delivery.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized Danish national registry data from 1980-1994.
  • Compared subsequent pregnancy outcomes of 15,727 women with induced abortions to 46,026 women without induced abortions.
  • Analyzed singleton live births for preterm and post-term delivery risks, adjusting for confounders.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Women with one or more prior induced abortions had higher rates of preterm and post-term singleton live births.
  • Odds ratios for preterm birth increased with the number of previous induced abortions (1.89-2.66).
  • Odds ratios for post-term birth also increased with prior induced abortions (1.34-1.58).

Conclusions:

  • Induced abortions are associated with an increased risk of both preterm and post-term subsequent pregnancies.
  • The risk of post-term delivery was elevated irrespective of the time between pregnancies.
  • The risk of preterm delivery was particularly noted with interpregnancy intervals exceeding 12 months.
