Muscle activity suppression during REM sleep develops with age. Tonic inhibition (TII) increases, while phasic inhibition (PII) decreases, suggesting distinct developmental pathways for these REM sleep atonia controls.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the developmental trajectory of muscle atonia during REM sleep in humans.
  • To quantify age-related changes in tonic and phasic inhibition during REMS.

  • Utilized polysomnographical recordings from 135 healthy individuals across a wide age range (premature babies to 77 years).
  • Quantified REMS atonia using the tonic inhibition index (TII) and phasic inhibition index (PII).

  • TII showed a significant age-related increase, reaching adult levels by preadolescence.
  • PII demonstrated a significant age-related decrease, reaching adult levels in early infancy.
