Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Rheumatology

Background:

  • Systemic sclerosis is an autoimmune disease characterized by fibrosis and vascular abnormalities.
  • Ocular manifestations of systemic sclerosis are diverse, but scleral pits are not commonly recognized.

Observation:

  • A 72-year-old woman with known systemic sclerosis presented with bilateral scleral pits.
  • The scleral pits were observed overlying the pars plana and were associated with surrounding scleral ischemia.

Findings:

  • The case report details the clinical presentation and imaging of bilateral scleral pits in a patient with systemic sclerosis.
  • Histopathological correlation was not performed in this case.

Implications:

  • Scleral pits should be considered as a potential ocular finding in patients diagnosed with systemic sclerosis.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Further research is warranted to understand the pathogenesis and clinical significance of scleral pits in systemic sclerosis.
